Sony's Cat Mascot Jumps Out from the 3D Illusion Shinjuku Cross Vision onto Another BillboardIt looks like a giant cat jumped out from a billboard! With the rise of 3D illusion billboards for advertising in Japan, Sony Network Communications used two LED screens to transport its feline mascot and catch the attention of passersbys. The internet service provider celebrated one million subscribers on its NURO internet service with the appearance of Nyaro, their cat mascot. The animation showed Nyaro waking up from a whiff of food, and jumping to the next LED screen to chase the scent. The display is the first time two screens were used for a single sequence, much to the enjoyment of their customers and the Internet. Instant promotion for them as well!  Image credit: Cross Shinjuku Vision#sony #cats #3Dillusions #Tokyo #3Dbillboards #advertisement
Watermelon-themed Gas Tank in Japan Dismantled Using Apple Peeling Demolition MethodIn order to demolish a 33.8 meter diameter and 37 meter high watermelon-like gas tank in Tokyo, two workers were suspended above the platform as they “peel away” the shell using the “apple peeling demolition” technique. The gas tank was used to promote the city, which is known for its watermelon, but eventually was rendered useless because gas distribution directly to homes is now possible in the area.“With residents saddened by the dismantling, the Tomisato Municipal Government sent a letter of thanks to the gas tank via Tokyo Gas in September 2020 for "being loved for many years as a symbol of Tomisato and for promoting Tomisato as a place abundant with watermelon produce."Image Credit: Mainichi/Tadakazu Nakamura#demolition #applepeeling #watermelon #tokyo #japan
Everyday Olympics by Adrian Hogan: Whimsical Illustrations of the Daily Heroic Feats of Athleticism of the People of TokyoThe Tokyo 2020 Olympics is where the world's most elite athletes compete, but Tokyo-based artist and illustrator Adrian Hogan noticed that the gestures of people he saw in everyday life in Tokyo were very much like those of the athletes."I saw a shop clerk recently who threw open their store shutters and it reminded me of a weightlifter throwing their barbell into the air," Hogan wrote on this Instagram post below. And so he drew the shop clerk as as if he was in the Olympics weightlifting competition. That sparked a series of whimsical illustrations showing the "heroic feats of athleticism outside the arenas" performed by the people in Tokyo on a daily basis. View them all on Hogan's Instagram page.Image above: Hogan wrote that a gust of wind blowing someone's umbrella inside out and watching them scramble to get out of the rain reminded him of the Olympic Torch runners.#Olympics #Tokyo2020 #AdrianHogan #Tokyo #sports
