This Book Is Bound with WhaleboneAllie Alvis, a book historian based in Washington, D.C., shares photos of this marvel that she recently purchased. The front and back covers are slices of whalebone, most likely from the vertebrae, according to marine ecologist Dr. Kelly J. Smith. Alvis says that the book dates back to 1914. It’s filled with pressed images of fake ferns. The bone itself most likely came from the Old Whaling Station, a landmark along the Los Angeles shore. This facility was an active whaling hub from 1864 through 1874. This is one of at least two collections of fern images bound in whalebone, which leads Alvis to conclude that “it was possibly a souvenir production.”#rarebooks #book #whales
Look at This Antique Circular BookJulius Echter von Mespelbrunn, the Prince-Bishop of Wurzburg in what is now Germany, was a wealthy and accomplished book collector. Rare book dealer Robin Halwas informs us that the book from that collection addressed five theological topics. Gregor Schenk, one of the greatest bookbinders of the German Renaissance, produced this gilt calfskin binding measuring 27 centimeters across sometime between 1585 and 1588.St. John’s College at the University of Cambridge says that Mespelbrunn was a leading figure of the German Counter Reformation and fervent ally of the Jesuits, so it is appropriate that his book collection would have a theological emphasis.-via History Defined | Photo: Robin Walhas#book
This Ad for the Book "Finis Veritatis? On Truth and Lies" Cleverly Use Optical IllusionsNow this is how you create ads! Aldis Ozoliņš used various optical illusion to convey the uncertainty of knowing the truth from a single glance. In addition, these illusions also allow viewers to observe the images from different points of view, which yield different interpretations. The decision of using illusions matches with the theme of Maris Kulis’ book, “Finis veritatis? About truth and lies”. Ozoliņš questions the meaning and value of the truth today, which is what Kulis’ touches on his book.
