His act won the top prize for the young artist bracket of the competition.The 17-year-old competed against older pianists, including musicians who train at Juilliard and the New England Conservatory of Music. As to why Rhoades was placed in a higher category, the young pianist already won the high school division, so he had no choice but to compete with conservatory students.
