Which Fruits Will Ripen After You Buy Them, and Why

When you shop the produce section at your local grocery, you can buy unripe avocados and let them ripen at home. Considering the short shelf life of a ripe avocado, I often buy a fairly ripe one for the kids to eat tonight, and one not yet ripe for them to eat in a couple days. But don't try that with oranges or pineapple- they can sit on your counter, but they won't get any sweeter than they already are. Keep in mind the concept of ripening is defined by the amount of sugar and other chemicals that add to the taste of the fruit. Strawberries and pineapples left out for several days will get softer, and may even change color, but that's not a sign of ripening. It's a sign of deterioration.
