Sara Henick Montague, an artist who lives in southern Florida, shares this unusual image of a bunch bananas. They’re called, specifically, “praying hands bananas”. Gastro Obscura informs us that this unusual variety is found at the Redland Fruit and Spice Park, a remarkably edible public botanical garden in the Miami area.
Branches of a banana tree are called “hands”, of which the individual fruits are “fingers”. The Specialty Produce company explains that the fingers of this variety are fused together. When viewed from the side, they appear to be hands folded in prayer.
Montague has eaten them raw, but advises sauteing them for a special and sweet treat.
