Cellular Tower in the Sky: Internet Blimp Brings Web Connectivity to Zanzibar
The power of technology, indeed. A mobile internet network will have a test run in the Tanzanian islands of Zanzibar and Pemba. UK company World Mobile will employ a hybrid network in these areas. The company will use blimp-like tethered balloons called aerostats to provide coverage across the islands. The balloons were created to survive winds up to 150 kilometers per hour (93 miles per hour) and stay airborne for up to 14 days before descending for refilling. The first balloon will be launched in June. The company aims to construct a network of nodes on the ground to provide internet service for residents in the area. It will be enough for video streaming and gaming. World Bank’s senior digital development specialist Sara Ballan believes that the connectivity they are building for the residents can unlock a potential that is important for society at large. "For a farmer, connectivity can open access to weather information, market prices and easier payment flows. For the economy, digital transformation is a driver of growth, innovation, job creation, and access to services," she explained.
