Signs at the Paris Catacombs Warn People Not to Touch the Skulls
Paris dates back to at least the Third Century B.C. After the Roman conquest two centuries later, it grew into a thriving town, then a major city in medieval times. The Smithsonian explains that, during the 18th Century, Paris was so large that it was necessary to relocate cemeteries to make room for the living. The bodies were gradually moved into the quarries beneath the city streets. Soon, it became customary to bury the dead immediately in these ossuaries.Selected sections of these catacombs are open to tourists with more morbid personalities than the norm. Writer Alyssa Berznak passes along this photo, which urges visitors to refrain from disturbing the dead by grabbing them.-via Super Punch#catacomb #Paris
