Hear the Oldest Instrument in the World, a Flute Made From Vulture Bone From 35,000 to 40,000 BCE
In the summer of 2008, archaeologists discovered an unusual bone in the Hohle Fels cave in the Ach Valley, Germany. The bone was carved into a flute, and was evidence for Paleolithic music. In fact, it was the oldest known prehistoric musical instrument. The bone flute was found in twelve pieces, but despite the fragmented state it was found in, experts claim that it is by far the most complete of all the musical instruments found from the caves of Swabia, Germany. The bone flute was carved from the bone of a griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus), has a length of 21.8 cm and a diameter of 8 mm. In addition, the instrument has five finger holes. In terms of design and structure, the windpipe has two deep, V-shaped notches to form the end where the musician blew to produce music.Listen to how this prehistoric sounds on the video below! image credit: H.
