New Zealand Couple Grew a Giant 17.4-lb Potato the Size of a Small Dog and Named it Doug
When Colin and Donna Craig-Brown were weeding in their garden, they unexpectedly encountered a rather strange and ugly “mutant”-looking object which they thought was a puffball mushroom."We couldn't believe it," Donna said. "It was just huge."It was a giant potato! This potato officially weighed 7.8 kg (17.4 lb) - a size of a small dog - and the couple is currently waiting for the response of the Guinness World Record for the title of world's heaviest potato. Meanwhile, Colin and Donna named the giant potato “Doug” and built a small cart to tow it around."We put a hat on him. We put him on Facebook, taking him for a walk, giving him some sunshine," Collin said. "It's all a bit of fun. It's amazing what entertains people."As they waited for the response, the potato already gained fame throughout the neighborhood. Although molds had grown through certain parts of the potato and it had started to smell, Colin never failed to do his best in preserving and cleaning it for it to remain presentable. The couple were honest to reveal that they didn’t really have any “gardening secrets.”"It's a mystery to me," Colin said. "It's one of nature's little pleasant surprises."Image credit: Donna Craig-Brown/AP
