How a Museum Preserves and Displays a Rare Deep Sea Anglerfish
For scientists to learn and understand a species, they need a closer look at the subject of observation. Researchers wouldn't have a hard time studying land animals since they can easily be seen. However, they will have a difficult time just recognizing the actual appearance of animals living in the depths of the ocean. To preserve an animal for study, they can place it in a freezer. The scientists at the Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County were able to preserve a type of rare anglerfish, the Pacific footballfish Himantolophus sagamius.William Ludt, assistant curator of ichthyology, shares with us the process of how they manage to keep the rare fish sharp over at Atlas Obscura.Image: William Ludt/Natural History Museums Of L.A.
