Luigi Colani (1928-2019) was a German industrial designer known for his “organic bio-design” of modern objects, including furniture, pianos, pens, and cars. His designs are organic in the sense that they frequently have curved forms, unlike the sharp, angular shapes of conventional design norms.
This 1979 automotive design is the “Sea Ranger”. Only one prototype was built based on a Mercedes Unimog truck chassis. It’s 20 feet long and weighs 8,800 pounds, but is quite bouyant. It can reach speeds of 62 MPH on land and 9 MPH in the water. Colani displayed the Sea Ranger at the 1980 Hanover Fair, a major trade fair in that era, but found no backers for mass production.
