The Ouroboros, a symbol from ancient Egypt and Greece (and The Neverending Story, where I first encountered it), expresses the unity of universe, which is in a constant cycle of creation and destruction. As we recover from our feasts on this Thanksgiving Day, we are participating in the consumption end of the story. Eventually, it will be our turn to be not the head of the snake, but the tail, as we consume ourselves and are consumed by the universe that we have just swallowed. When we eat, we fatten ourselves for consumption. What better way could there be to participate in this cycle than Danielle Baskin’s clever pumpkin pie?
