George Crumb is a Pulitzer and Grammy Award-winning composer known for his experimental pieces. In a 2006 blog post, writer and consultant Andrew Hearst describes buying sheet music from Crumb’s Makrokosmos Volume collection for the piano. The image above is from the composition titled “Twin Suns”. Crumb’s sheet music is designed in a circular fashion.
Here’s a video recording of a 2016 performance of the piece by Kyle Shaw. If I correctly understand the construction of a grand piano, Shaw is pressing down on the pins as part of Crumb’s composition. What a novel approach!
