The 1972 Presidential Election was one of the most lopsided in American history. The Nixon/Agnew ticket slaughtered the Democrats at the polls. George McGovern and Sargent Shriver got only 17 electoral votes contrasted with the Republicans’ 520 electoral votes.
Less than a year later, Vice President Spiro Agnew would resign to avoid going to prison. President Nixon lasted two years before Watergate scandal brought down his administration.
Weird Universe shares photos of a bizarre chess set on sale during the height of Nixon’s political career. Austrian sculptor Alexander Silveri (warning: artistic nudity) sculpted leading Republicans and Democrats on opposite sides of this election and chessboard.
This set is, I gather, different from the Watergatechess sets available on online auctions, as it shows the final stage of Nixon’s presidency.
