New World Record Set for Paddling in a Pumpkin

Duane Hansen of Syracuse, Nebraska, has been learning to grow giant pumpkins. His largest ever is this year's "Big Berta," an 861-pound pumpkin. That's not large enough to win competitions these days, but the pumpkin is as big as a boat, so Hansen set out to break the Guinness World Record for pumpkin paddling!

On Saturday, the day after his 60th birthday, Hansen climbed into the hollowed-out Big Berta and sailed down the Missouri River from Bellevue to Nebraska City, which would beat the old record of 25.5 miles. Hansen surpassed that record at 2:52 PM and continued on another 12 miles to Nebraska City.
