India's Air Force Decorated Helicopters to Look Like Elephants

Republic Day is an Indian national holiday that celebrates the day that nation adopted a constitution that freed it from rule by the British monarch. India became a republic, hence the name of the day.

In 2017, The Times of India reported on these strange photos now going viral. Over forty years ago, the Indian Air Force modified French-built Alouette helicopters to look like elephants.

They then flew down the Rajpath, a ceremonial boulevard in New Delhi. This, one pilot remembers, was very difficult, as the fragile attachments created additional dangers in flight. They had to fly slowly to ensure that the fabric did not rip off and become entangled in the rotors.
