Dewey Decimal and the Librarians Was an Actual Band

ā€‹Weird Universe shares these amazing images of an album cover for a band that seems too good to be true.

Well, as a librarian, I have to be fascinated by a band that carries a theme of a profession (incorrectly) not known for its wild lifestyle. And as a librarian, I had to verify that this band was real.

This band got the attention of American Libraries, the official magazine of the American Library Association. On p.16 of the February 2005 issue (sorry, but it's paywalled), a brief article asserts that Dewey Decimal and the Librarians was a band founded at Macalester College in 1963. It toured Minnesota during the the folk rock era of the 60s.

An obituary for one of its founding members, Bob Stimson, appeared in the January 26, 2011 issue of the Star-Tribune. That article (again, paywalled) says that the group performed for a year.

A 2007 post on the website Facsimile Magazine provides additional information about the band. Dave Howard played the bass, Don MacKenzie the guitar, and Pete Malen provided vocals. Facsimile Magazine also has MP3 copies of three of their songs, including the charming bluegrass song "Boil Dem Cabbage Down."
