In a remote patch of desert, hundreds of miles away from any city, China is building a secret airfield that inspires a comparison to Area 51.
"I think we're observing what appears to be a pretty important facility for China's military space activities that appears to be growing," said Ankit Panda of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace to NPR. The area's remoteness makes it perfect to test secret planes.
In 2020, satellite photo revealed that China landed a new and highly classified "space plane".
"Atmospheric aircraft, high-altitude aircraft, high-altitude drones, potential bombers, other experimental aircraft," Panda added. "You know the sort of stuff that the United States might be accused of testing at a site like Area 51."
