Astronauts Use Space Chiles to Make Space Tacos

Crew members aboard the International Space Station have been growing a garden in space. The Plant Habitat-04 experiment grew a crop of hybrid Hatch chiles of the NuMex "Española Improved" variety in microgravity. What better way to test the ability to grow food in space than to eat the harvest? The plants have been growing since July, and Friday the astronauts tasted both green and fully-ripe red chiles. NASA astronaut Megan McArthur then made fajitas with the chiles, combing them with beef, rehydrated tomatoes and artichokes, and tortillas. It's not the first garden grown in space; other crews have grown lettuce, kale, and Chinese cabbage. Still, this is no doubt the tastiest crop they've grown yet.
